Recently, I participated in a review at the CIID. The “Meet the food you eat” project caught my eye, for that it relates closely to mobility. A project by Eilidh Dickson, Siddharth Muthyala, Adam Little. It is an interactive visualization of the travel (by plane/train/truck/ship) of food, “a scale that measures a food product’s environmental impact Naked Lunch divx
.” Here are two pictures:
Each package has an RFID tag which provides some the information (The travel length, and mode of transportation). Users needed to add weights (trees) on the other side to visualize the energy the transportation of that particular packaged good is taking:
As an exhibition piece, this scale will raise questions about the food you buy, where it comes from and how it is transported. With a subject as complex as carbon emissions and the global food economy, our scale is only an entry point and is intended to raise more questions than it will answer. This scale can also be viewed as a hypothetical kitchen appliance or point to a future grocery store service. The data it uses is important but remains hidden to most people, and we hope this will not be the case for much longer. Milk dvdrip
Also to mention (info from the latest newsletter) Dezineo provides us with the example of the packaging of Newton Running
sport shoes made of 100% recycled shoes thought of by TDA Advertising & Design. It didn’t work because the boxes couldn’t pack properly, hence a higher cost of transportation…:
Malgré la volonté d’une démarche écologique intelligente, l’agence et la marque se sont aperçues, lors de la progression du projet, que ce type de packaging induisait des effets contraires. En effet, la forme de l’emballage ne permettait pas d’optimiser les coûts de transport, car les conditionnements ne s’emboîtaient pas régulièrement, ce qui engendrait une perte de place, donc une dépense plus élevée en carburant. Le projet a donc été abandonné.
