“J’étais une occidentale en Iran, une iranienne en occident. Je n’avais aucune identité. Je ne voyais même plus pourquoi je vivais.” Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis.
Why blogging this? Recent use of ICT and social platforms (Facebook, Twitter) has demonstrated people’s belief in technology to mobilize population. Yet the source of the claim matters too. The Perspolis 2.0 version is “made by 2 iraniens living abroad” so it is written on the website. Persepolis 2.0 “was made with permission of the publishers of Marjane Satrapi’s original cartoon on which the film was based” says one of the authors (Persepolis 2.0: Iran polls inspire sequel. Posted by Matthew Weaver Tuesday 30 June 2009, guardian.co.uk)Unlike her original work, Persepolis 2.0 is filled with flaws and inaccuracies, but the bottom line is that it has helped spark hundreds of conversations and that’s more than we could have expected.”
I do also blog this because the quote from Marjane Satrapi illustrates what I call “mental mobility”, and all sorts of cultural displacements.
