Julia

by Yaz

I have met Julia at the SASE2005 conference, a meeting on socio-economics held in Budapest, June 30 - July 2, 2005. Her research interests are “actor network theory”, “collaborative virtual environments”, “cybergeography”, and “economic geography”… Julia works on socio-economics of space. We spoke about interdisciplinarity and methodology.

“McEverything”?

by Yaz

SZ: “The nomad of today expects McDonald, the same hotel room, the “McEverything”! Are we nomads to get things better or because we are craving for familiarity? It is a communal responsibility because if everything looks the same, people still are different. The alienation of spaces implies policy implications regarding crime and the engagement of the community.”

a new breed of nomads

by Yaz

THESIS/UbiComp2004 Conference:: Today, we observe an increase in mobility, people being able to travel “everywhere” they are permitted to for work, living and leisure while staying connected from “anywhere” in the global matrix. In this space of mobile populations, goods, and information, a new breed of nomads arises, as dependant of the environments they travel in as traditional nomads. These new nomads, neo-nomads, are technologically geared and pass through environments, essentially urban, which offer the receptive milieu they need to survive. These nomads are no “Flâneurs.” They move purposefully, and fast usually.
If anywhere and everywhere is their realm, and in a time where there is no limits to roaming, be it mental or physical one wonders how these new nomads assert a sense of belonging to a place, and what is the nature and extent of their territory.

Jérôme

by Yaz

Here we speak Franglais. It is not the first time I meet Jérôme. We have met in Cambridge, MA, a long time ago. He was working for Nokia, and I had just finished my Master of Science in Architecture Studies at MIT which was about neo-nomads already!

Jérôme? It is ifeedyou.com, www.parlonstennis.com, www.assiettevolante.ch, www.parlonsfoot.com and many more projects.

I speak people and buildings, trying to understand how we evolve and build with new technologies… He makes them!
