alternative uses of laptops

by Yaz

Just for fun it is Friday… The ultimate neo-nomad basic that can do it all… except laundry… or what?

More on crookedbrainsSome use the Macbook Air to cut their birthday cake… So trivial.

mobile uploads

[map, use]
by Yaz

No phone carrier outside the US, Canada and the UK supports direct mobile upload from your mobile phone to Facebook :( Does it have anything to do with the geography of use of social networks in the world?

Infographie via Radar, via Le Monde.

I have to change phone carrier (From TDC to Telia) if I want an iPhone in Denmark. These are not vital to me really but it gives a glimpse of the powers at play.

bookcrossing

by Yaz

“The idea came to Ron back in March of 2001, as he and his wife Kaori were admiring the PhotoTag.org site, which tracks disposable cameras loosed into the wild. He already knew about the popularity of WheresGeorge.com (which tracks U.S. currency by serial number), and that got him thinking: what other physical object might people enjoy tracking? A few minutes later, after a glance at his full bookshelf, the idea of tracking books occurred to him.”

Your travel carbon footprint

by Yaz

If you are a Dopplr user, you probably have read the message below already:

One of Dopplr’s founding principles was to give travellers a way to understand the carbon impact of their travels. Now we’ve launched a tool that can calculate the carbon you use on every trip you make.

The calculator uses technology from AMEE, an organisation that provides “a neutral, open platform for measuring the ‘Carbon-Footprint’ of anything,”. You can find out more about AMEE here: http://www.amee.cc/

Thanks to AMEE, all you need to do is tell Dopplr where you’re going and how you will travel (by plane, train, or car). We work out the carbon footprint for the trip and display it to you on your profile page, as kilograms of CO2 burned monthly and annually. A total for all your trips is shown at the bottom of the chart.

Your carbon profile is your own private data, but you can share it with your fellow travellers on Dopplr if you wish.

Why are we doing this?

Because we think a lot of people who travel frequently would like to know this information, but don’t have an easy way to get hold of it. Once you have a clear view of your own carbon footprint, you can take steps to reduce it if you see fit.

Also, by aggregating carbon data over time, we can analyse trends and patterns throughout the Dopplr community. It might help us find ways to further optimise travel for individuals and groups in the long term, and further reduce carbon emissions.

Note that:

To calculate your carbon use, we must send an (anonymous) copy of your trip data to the AMEE servers. This will take a few moments, but only has to be done once, after which we will keep the data in AMEE up to date.
